What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones (also termed as renal calculi. nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of mineral and salts which are deposited into kidney or urinary tract. Kidney stones can affect any part of your urinary tract from kidneys to urinary bladder. In India 12% of the population are expected to have been affected from kidney stone disease. Out of those 50% are severely affected by renal damage which even leads to loss of kidneys. It evenly affects to both male and female.
What are symptoms of kidney stones?
Kidney stones usually does not cause until it moves around into your kidneys or passes into ureters. If it becomes lodged in the ureters, it may block the flow of urine and causes the kidney to swell and ureter to spasm which can be very painful.
- Severe, sharp pain in the back and side, below the ribs
- Pain that radiated to lower abdomen and groin.
- Pain or burning sensation while urinating.
- Cloudy or foul smelling urine
- Persistent need to urinate, urinating more often than usual or urinating in small amounts.
what are kidney stone treatment options?
ESWL
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a technique to treat stones in kidney and ureter that does not require surgery, instead high energy shock waves are passed in the body to break the stones in smaller pieces like small sand grains comes out of the body while urinating.
RIRS
Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is an endoscopic surgery to remove kidney stones located in upper ureter and small kidney stones. In recent technological developments RIRS has emerged as a safe, reliable and very efficient method to remove small kidney stones.
URS
Uretroscopy (URS) is a form of minimally invasive surgery to remove small to medium sized kidney stones located in any part of the urinary tract. In this ureteroscopy, small telescope is passed through the urethra and into the ureter to remove a stone.
PCNL
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove stones located in upper ureter and kidney that are too large for other forms of kidney stone removal treatment such as shockwave, lithotripsy or ureteroscopy
