Overview

Hirsutism is a condition that causes growth of coarse and/ or coloured hair on the body and face of women. This is usually the result of an underlying medical condition such as hormonal imbalance. It also starts during puberty in men and women.

This type of unwanted hair growth is most common on the upper lip, sideburns, chin, lower abdomen and around the areola of the breasts.

Although this condition is most commonly associated with women, Hirsutism for men also requires diagnosis and treatment as it can be related to serious underlying health issues.

Symptoms

  • The hair that grows on the body is mature. This means that it resembles the hair on the person’s head in colour and texture.
  • In the case of chronic Hirsutism, hair grows on the shoulders, upper back, upper abdomen and chest.
  • Acne
  • Oily skin
  • Receding hairline
  • Alopecia
  • A deeper voice in women
  • Enlarged clitoris.

Causes

There are various causes for this condition. Hirsutism treatment success depends on identifying the cause, which includes:

  • Increased levels of androgens or male hormones
  • Oversensitivity to androgens in the hair follicles
  • Increased level of testosterone in men
  • Higher levels of insulin leading to excessive production of male hormones
  • Side effects of certain medicines like steroids
  • Tumours in pituitary glands, adrenal glands and ovaries

When there are no identifiable Hirsutism causes, it is termed as an idiopathic condition.

Diagnosis

The menstrual cycle of women, in particular, is an important medical history for Hirsutism diagnosis. To identify any other underlying causes, the following tests are recommended:

  • Blood test
  • MRI scans of the brain
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • CT scan of adrenal glands

Hirsutism treatment varies according to the causal factor, as mentioned below:

  • High BMI: For men and women with high BMI, a good weight loss program and diet can help manage androgen levels.
  • PCOS and hormonal imbalance: Hirsutism PCOS treatment includes medication like birth control pills or insulin regulation medication. In the case of chronic conditions, invasive procedures like ovarian drilling are used.

Hirsutism medicine also includes anti-androgen tablets to balance hormonal levels. In case of a tumour, removal of the tumour and other follow-up treatment procedures are carried out.

There are several cosmetic treatment options for Hirsutism as well, such as:

  • Shaving, waxing and plucking
  • Chemical softeners for the hair
  • Depilatory creams
  • Laser hair removal
  • Electrolysis

If you have opted for any cosmetic Hirsutism cure, then you must protect your skin for up to 2 weeks after the treatment:

  • Avoid long hours in the sun for at least 7 days
  • Do not undergo any chemical or cosmetic treatments for at least 2 weeks.
  • Follow up with your doctor after the given time period.
  • Take your medications on time.

Hirsutism prevention is possible only by following a healthy and active lifestyle and maintaining a nutrient-rich diet.

  • Pain-less and scar-less treatment options
  • Experienced doctors
  • Higher rate of success for Hirsutism treatment
  • Quick recovery
  • Affordable treatment options
  • Follow up after the course of medication to check your progress.
